Introduction

Transparency is an essential aspect for business’ success that requires executives and business owners to critically ensure that the right skilled workers are hired. The process of hiring candidates is also a tactical task due to the fact that deciding on whom to hire amongst many applicants is a difficult decision. Most candidates who are privileged enough to be hired feel they are very qualified for the job, while those who do not have the opportunity to be taken feel that although they are qualified, those in charge of the hiring process are biased in favor of those hired. To ensure that this problem is avoided in the hiring process, there is a need for transparency. To improve the trust of candidates in the hiring process, it is imperative to engage the following strategies.

Strategies for Transparent Hiring Process to Improve Candidate Trust

Accessibility of Information

Ensuring that information is made available to candidates who have shown interest in the hiring process is one way to improve candidate trust. If candidates are provided with access to information about the company’s principles and values, the dos and don’ts, and what is expected of them, they will feel more relaxed and have trust in the hiring process.

Candidates find it hard to trust a hiring process where there is no information on the expectations of the company. Based on the competitive situation of the labor market, many candidates are already anxious about getting a suitable job. When there is an opening in a company, potential candidates are gathered to undertake the hiring process but, there is an unease among candidates. When candidates have a clear understanding of the requirements of the business or the company, they feel more assured about the hiring process.

Those who have the required skills and qualifications feel they stand a chance in being hired, and those who do not meet those requirements already know that the chances of being hired are very slim and in case they are not hired, they understand the reason behind the decision taken by the hiring committee. It is therefore vital that information be made available for candidates before, during, and after the hiring process.

Effective and Efficient Communication

Communication is a two-way process that involves the sender, the person sending the message, and the receiver, the person who receives the message.

In this case, the hiring company is the sender, and the potential candidates are the receivers. It is very important that executives or those in charge of hiring pass all necessary information to candidates in order to build their trust.

When candidates receive all the information that is needed in the hiring process, they will understand what is required of them and ensure to meet the target. When organizations clearly communicate the hiring requirements, such as the timeline, documents, appearance, and other criteria to candidates, they will be better informed and engaged. This will reduce their anxiety, thereby building their trust in the hiring process.

Equality and Fairness

Doing what is right is the principle that enables businesses to skyrocket.

In the hiring process, it is expected that the hiring team does what is morally and ethically right. All candidates who have applied for the job should be assessed based on the same criteria without biases, thereby creating trust among candidates.

When all candidates are treated in the same manner and information is passed to them without giving off a sense of favoritism, trust will be built.

When some candidates are given preferential treatment while others are not allowed to have such privileges, candidates will definitely lack trust in those hiring teams as well as the company. Therefore, to engage in equality and fairness, all candidates must be treated without partiality.

Feedback Mechanism

All candidates must be given feedback before and after the hiring process, as this will help in building their trust and confidence level.

Before the hiring process, it is necessary that the candidates are informed of the reason why they have been considered for the job and selected for the hiring process, and after the hiring process is over, they should also be made aware of the reason why they have been given the position or why they were not selected. When candidates understand the reason why they were not given the opportunity, they will feel less discouraged and will want to focus on improving their skills for future opportunities. When the reasons are not given, especially when a candidate had hoped to be selected, the candidate will have distrust towards the company and feel ill-treated. So, companies need to give feedback to candidates, both those hired and those not hired. The feedback mechanism helps build trust and encourages future skills improvement.

Branding

Branding helps outsiders understand first-hand information about the company, making applicants and potential employees learn about the organization’s structure, culture, and working strategies. This creates confidence and trust in the hiring process. The more candidates learn about a company, the more they understand their chances of being employed. When, in the end, they are not selected, it becomes very easy to understand why that decision was made.

When there is no branding and information about the company, it is not easily accessible. Candidates are always on their toes because they are unsure of what is expected of them, and they will think that the hiring process is vague. Organizations that are considered transparent in their hiring process enjoy positive employee branding because candidates consider them to be fair and trustworthy.

Consistency

When organizations are consistent with their hiring decisions and strategies, candidates feel more relaxed and heard.

Consistency is observed in a business when there is alignment of people of similar interests, routine processes, and attitudes that support core values and standards that deliver high-quality results.

In the hiring process, consistency promotes transparency which in turn ensures that all candidates are assessed based on the same criteria. It further strengthens brand reputation, improves efficiency, and fosters accountability.

Consistency necessitates alignment of actions, decisions, and communication in order to build trust among candidates. Consistency reduces the waste of time and effort, preparing candidates for what they should expect in the market. So, businesses need to set clear expectations by defining the roles, responsibilities, and goals of the candidates.

Information about the company should be consistent and regular, and business executives should lead by example. This approach helps create clarity and reduces doubt and anxiety.

Accountability

Accountability is the ability to take responsibility for one’s actions without being influenced. It entails being answerable for performance, taking control of actions, acknowledging mistakes, and managing the consequences in a professional setting.

In a competitive market, the ability of businesses to take action when needed helps to create trust not just among employees but also among potential candidates.

Accountability fosters respectful conduct, proactiveness, creativity, independence, determination, diligence, and commitment. In the competitive market, accountability is a vital principle that creates honesty, discipline, trust, and loyalty in potential candidates. It also involves delegating tasks, setting deadlines, defining ownership, and rewarding success. Candidates feel confident in the hiring process when they understand that the business is accountable, responsible, and liable. Therefore, the application of the accountability principle will enable candidates to believe that the hiring process is transparent.

Organizational Culture

Organizational culture is the process of sharing set values, behaviors, beliefs, and norms within an organization or business.

It entails upholding the core values of the business, understanding and engaging in the shared actions, and supporting the transition of the business, including ensuring customer satisfaction through collaboration with teams.

When an organization has an effective culture, all members of the organization collaborate with one another and use their skills for the betterment of the organization. This culture is also extended to candidates undergoing the hiring process.

When candidates understand the cultural values of a company, they feel connected and develop trust in the hiring process.

Ethical Consideration

Ethics refers to principles and standards of conduct that guide how businesses and their employees interact with their audience in the workplace.

Ethical considerations help build trust, improve business reputation, and support long-term success. Ethical considerations are moral decisions guiding an organization, such as fairness, respect, integrity, confidentiality, safety, and many others.

When candidates see that the company is very committed to its ethics, they are more trusting of the hiring process, believing that the organization will do what is right.

Being ethical is a vital principle that businesses use to gain trust from their customers. It also prevents potential legal risks, scandals, and conflict. Applying the same principles in the hiring process will enhance candidate trust and confidence.

CONCLUSION

The hiring process is a crucial aspect of an organization that entails diverse operations and principles that will facilitate fairness and transparency.

It has been observed that many candidates are not confident in their position because they fear that the organization may be biased in the hiring system.

This paper has explained what an organization can do to avoid tension among candidates in the hiring process. The above-mentioned principles will guide an organization to deliver transparent and effective hiring decisions.
